Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland - Teaching Ideas



This book is a great way to show your students all the different things they could be thankful for on Thanksgiving. The children in this book are thankful for teachers, pets, parents, friends, grandparents, having their own room, hot chocolate, their favorite books and many other things/people.

Listed below are some reading skills and strategies that you can use to create a lesson using this book.

Reading skills and strategies:
  • author's point of view - 3rd person. Be sure to find 3 pieces of evidence to support this.
  • author's purpose - inform {evidence} the author informs us of all the different things a person could be thankful for.
  • cause and effect - Why is the little boy thankful for his mom and dad? because they love him when he is good and sometimes bad. Why is the girl thankful for everyone else in their family? because her grandma gives good hugs. Why is the little boy thankful for his teacher? because he feels special when she hangs up his artwork. Why is the girl thankful for her friends? because they make her laugh. Why is the boy thankful for his room? because he likes to go there when he wants to be by himself. Why is the boy thankful for the dogs and cats. because he thinks it is fun to pet them. Why is the little girl thankful for her books? because her mom and dad read them to her before bed. Why is the boy thankful for bright sunny days? because he can go outside and play with his friends.
  • classify & categorize - Things that make you happy and things that make you sad.
  • connections - {possible text-to-self connections} Being thankful for mom and dad, dogs and cats, books, sunny days, rainy days, etc.
  • main idea & details - {main idea} The main idea of the story is all the things someone could be thankful for. {details} Teachers make you feel special. Dogs and cats make you happy when they let you pet them. Sunny days give you the opportunity to play outside with friends. Friend make you laugh.
  • strong thought - What are you thankful for?
  • theme - Everyone has something that makes them happy.
  • visualize - What makes you happy?
