Top 10 February Book List

It is time for my February Top 10 list, in order of the day they help to celebrate.

February is Dental Health Month, so it is only fitting to include this wonderful book in my Top 10 list. Laurie Keller does a fabulous job weaving information into a hilarious tale of Dr. Flossman and his 32 teeth (students). Your students will have a great time learning about dental health with this book!

You can never go wrong with a Gail Gibbons book. This book is filled with facts, history and information about Groundhog Day which is February 2nd.

February 4th - 8th is School Counseling Week. This is such a fun week for students when they write thank you notes, create posters and give little gifts to their school counselor. However, not all students may know exactly what a school counselor does, especially if they don't ever have a need to see one. This book is a "story to help children learn about school counselors". It helps students to understand what their school counselor is there for - important information for those kids that need someone to talk to but don't know who it should be.

February 10th is the Chinese New Year and this is a fun little book that follows a family and all they do to get ready for the Chinese New Year celebration.

Mardi Gras is on February 12th. This book is a great introduction to this super fun celebration. I hope you have time to introduce your students to the fun traditions of Mardi Gras and can bring this colorful celebration into your room.

Abraham Lincoln's birthday is February 12th and this book is just perfect for giving your students a general overview of Lincoln's life. These "Picture Books" do a great job giving just enough information written in story form for your students to love.

A February book list wouldn't be complete without a Valentine's Day book, and this year I am picking The Day It Rained Hearts. This little gem shows that putting thought into homemade cards means so much. Your students will love how Cornelia Augusta put a lot of thought into the cards she was making for her friends and how at the end, the cards were just perfect for each person she sent them to.

February 14th is also Library Lovers Day. I love this day because I love libraries and what libraries represent - books, reading and story time. I am choosing this cute little book for Library Lovers Day because I love how much the little mouse loves to read, and I love how his love of reading turns to him writing his own book! LOVE!

February 20th is Love Your Pet Day. I included this day in my list because I absolutely LOVE my puppies. I could not imagine not having them around to make me laugh and give me hugs and kisses whenever I need them. To me this is the ultimate love your pet book. This is one of my favorite books from my childhood.

I know we celebrate Presidents Day this month, but the reason for Presidents Day is because of George Washington's (& Abe Lincoln) birthday. So I have selected this George Washington book in honor of Washington's birthday on February 22nd.

I hope I have listed some books that will make it onto your February must read list or perhaps I just introduced you to a few new books you might want to look for the next time you are at the library.

Happy Reading!

  3. Great list. I have heard of Raining Hearts but have never read it. I will check it out. I always use The Tooth Book: A Guide to Healthy Teeth and Gums by Edward Miller for my dental health unit. If you haven't seen it you should check it out!
