Book Suggestions

I am always looking for suggestions as to which book to work on next. If you have a classroom library full of books and have been wanting to use some of them for lessons, but just don't have the time to go through the book, let me know, I will be happy to help you out! Just leave me a suggestion in the comments and I will see what I can do!!

Here is the Scholastic Book Wizard to help you level your books!

  1. I love the book Beatrice Doesn't Want To! I use it at the beginning of the year for teaching the importance of finding a book you can connect to. I am a second grade teacher and would love to have some of your activities for this book!

    1. Hi Beth!
Thank you so much for the suggestion. I have not heard of this book, but look forward to getting it and coming up with something for you. I will be on vacation for a couple of weeks, but I will try to get something done by mid August. I hope you are enjoying your summer so far!

I started this week and am looking to use "Beatrice" in a couple weeks. Just was wondering if you had a chance to read it yet?

    1. Hi Beth,
I have been waiting for the book to get back in my library. I now have it and my daughter drew me some cute graphics so I will work on something for you the next few days.

  4. I would love to see what extension activities you would reccommend for "Alfred Nobel: The Man Behind the Peace Prize" by K. Wargin. I am a pre-service teacher and recently came across this book while creating a lesson. I absolutely love it, and would like to incorporate it in a meaningful way in my future class.

    Thanks,

  5. I love your site! Thank you so much for all your hard work from which so many teachers benefit. Have you heard of the book "Scaredy Squirrel"? It has become a series but the first one is a great one for the theme of facing one's fears. Thank you again.

  6. I love your sight and how you have so many strategies tied to one book. I'm always telling my students good books are worth reading over and over. They really get the mini-lesson focus when the book is familar. With that said, I'd love to see some lessons with the Tacky the Penguin series and The Kissing Hand series. Keep up the good work!

    1. Hey Leeanne,
Funny that you are asking about these books because I am working on a packet as we speak (or write). I will have the post/review go out sometime in July but the packet should be posted in TpT sooner.

  10. Hello Shawna, Great blog!!

I am the author of "Invisible", a picture book about pregnancy and birth and something... invisible. You can read the story for free online in English (and in 26 other languages) on http://issuu.com/-m3-

The project is a voluntary collaboration with an illustrator and over 30 translators and proofreaders from all over the world. It would be wonderful if you could share some thoughts about the story on your blog!

    1. Hi Lucille,
I do have a few. Search under the Labels section on the right side bar under the Books pull down menu. I have the following books:
A Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr.
      All About Turkeys
Johnny Appleseed An American Who Made a Difference
      Bears: An Usborn Book

I have more nonfiction books in my pile, I just need more hours in the day. I hope these help.

  15. This site is such a blessing and great resource for me! I use it for those kiddos in my class who are reading above grade level for Guided Reading groups. This year I'm teaching first grade and have four students who are reading on 3rd-4th grade levels. We are a private school with limited resources, so I am looking for activities to go along with books I already have. Here's a list, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  17. Love, Love, Love your blog! A great picture book as you have demonstrated can be used over and over again as a reading/writing mentor text. They can be read multiple times allowing students to dig deeper and learn something new. Thank You so much for these great resources. One of my favorite go to books is: The Raft by Jim LaMarche and books by Cynthia Rylant like The Great Gracie Chase. I am now an avid follower. Thank You for your time and willingness to share your ideas. Tami goldent@westnoble.k12.in.us
