May Top 10 Books

This month I have found some really fun books that I am excited to share with you. Some of the books are even filled with great character lessons. I hope you find something here that is of interest to you and your students.

May 5-11 is National Family Week so I picked this great book by Cynthia Rylant, The Relatives Came. This is such a great story about family. It is full of love and hugs and the knowledge that even though the relatives have to go home, they will be back next summer. This story really makes me look forward to summer!

May 5-11 is National Hug Holiday Week. This book, The Giant Hug by Sandra Horning is wonderful book about a hug that is sent through the mail and hugs everyone it comes in contact with. Your students will love the adventures this hug goes on and be surprised by the ending.

National Police Week is May 12-18. How could I not pick the book Officer Buckle and Gloria to represent this week? I don't think there is a kid out there that doesn't love this book. Officer Buckle works so hard to keep all the kids safe and Gloria is always there in the background making them laugh. This is a book the kids will ask for over and over!

National New Friends, and Old Friends Week is May 18-25. This book, How To Be a Friend by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown helps kids learn how to keep friends, make new friends, deal will bullies and how to settle arguments. A definite must read during this week about friends.

Who loves Mother Goose? Who loves Richard Scarry?  I sure do and I love this book! May 1st is Mother Goose Day. Why not pull out your Mother Goose books and let your kids have fun with these wonderful stories.

May 1st is also School Principals' Day and what better book to read than The Principal's New Clothes by Stephanie Calmenson. This is a fun story about a dapper dressing principal that gets tricked into wearing a new suit made out of a special material. Everyone is surprised to see the principal with no clothes on and then finally a kindergartener tells him that he is wearing NO clothes at all - except his underwear! Your students will crack up as they see the principal at a school function in nothing but his underwear.

May 3rd is National Two Different Colored Shoes Day. So, I decided a book about walking in other people's shoes would fit this perfectly. This book, Stand in My Shoes will teach about empathy and what it is like to walk in the shoes of another person. This fun day can easily turn into a great character lesson.

Who can forget Cinco de Mayo? This little book, Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the Mexican Hat Dance is a story about practicing for the upcoming Mexican Hat Dance as well as having an informational section about the holiday. This is a fun story with great information.

Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons is a great book to go with Chocolate Chip Cookie Day which is celebrated on May 15th. This book is another great character lesson book because if is filled with what it means to be: honest, fair, empathetic, clever, honest, etc. So, as you and your students "take a bite" you will be reading about character and values.

On May 27th we celebrate Memorial Day. Here is a great informational book about how Americans celebrate this special day.

Enjoy your May!
